05 April, 17:09

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, APRIL 5 - The permanent committee of the Mediterranean Network for Animal Health has convened today in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, to assist in checks on the health conditions of farms in the Mediterranean region and to fight against diseases suffered by livestock in the area, according to sources from the Spanish Ministry for Farming, Food and the Environment. The meeting was attended by ministerial representatives from Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, Portugal, France, Italy and Spain.

The aim of the meeting was to analyse the situation of a number of animal diseases, in particular the evolution of foot-and-mouth disease and plagues of small ruminants in some Mediterranean countries, as well as the spread of the "Schmallangberg" virus in European countries. Efforts were made to identify collaboration initiatives from joint preventive action. The Mediterranean Network for Animal Health, an initiative promoted by Spain, aims to identify a cooperation framework to improve the capacity for reaction to animal diseases that hit the region. The Network has already allowed a strengthening of resources for national veterinary services in epidemiological vigilance, diagnostic laboratories and regional coordination of the struggle against the diseases, facilitating the eliminations of potential commercial hurdles.
