Tunisia: Court rehabilitates purged officer

First such ruling since Jasmine Revolution

12 July, 16:13

(ANSAMed) - TUNIS, JULY 12 - A former police officer who was de facto purged for his actions during the Ben Ali regime has been rehabilitated by an administrative court, Tap news agency reported today.

Colonel Lofti Guelmami was responsible for a subsection of the Interior Ministry in the former regime that dealt with inspections and controls. Along with another 41 Interior Ministry colleagues, he was forced into early retirement on February 2, 2011, two weeks before the fall of the Ben Ali regime.

Two former ministers, including ex Interior Minister Farhat Rajhi, testified in his favor in what Guelmami said was ''a long battle'' to prove his innocence.

This is the first such ruling since last year's so-called Jasmine Revolution. Several similar cases are currently pending before other Tunisian courts. (ANSAMed).
