Syria: Clinton urges military to desert ''the dictator''

Fabius confirms General Tlass deserted, on way to Paris

06 July, 18:09

(ANSAMed) - PARIS, JULY 6 - ''It's time to abandon the dictator, to embrace the Syrian people and to move to the side of the just,'' US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the Syrian military at a press conference at the US Embassy here.

''I want to say to the officers and the soldiers who are standing by the regime that the Syrian people will remember the choices you have made,'' Clinton said.

Clinton's words come as French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius confirmed today that Syrian General Manaf Tlass has deserted, and is on his way to Paris, as reported yesterday by a pro-Assad site. Tlass, a general of the Republican Guard, was thought to be Assad's best and perhaps oldest friend. His father, former Defense Minister Mustafa Tlass, was faithful to Assad's father, the late President Hafez, and was instrumental in Assad's rise to power, introducing him to the highest military ranks.
