Libya: Tunisia to extradite Mahmoudi upon fair trial

Risk of tribal uprising, Gaddafi Prime Minister's lawyer

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, MAY 23 - In order to allow the extradition to Libya of former Gaddafi's Prime Minister, Baghdadi el Mahmoudi, which was announced by the Tunisian Ministry of Justice yesterday, Tunis poses some conditions. The first is that the Colonel's former right arm must be guaranteed a fair trial. This is what the official spokesperson of the Tunisian Republic's Presidency, Adnen Manser, specified earlier today, adding that Tunisia will not hand Al Mahmoudi over 'if it maintains that his life might be at risk''. The former Prime Minister's lawyer, Mabrouk Kourchid, said that the extradition might prompt trouble fed, in South Tunisia, by the tribes who were closed to the dictator. The lawyer said that a tribal conflict might burst out, since Mahmoudi belongs to a Libyan tribe settling close to the Tunisian border. The announcement of the soon-to-be extradition caused the reaction of a group of supporters of the former Libyan dictator, who spoke threatening words concerning the security of Tunisians citizens through a Facebook page.
