Serbia: Elections, Tadic: Nikolic not trustworthy

Final appeals to electorate ahead of Sunday's poll

(ANSAmed) - BELGRADE, MAY 15 - Outgoing president and reformist, pro-Europe candidate in Sunday's presidential election, Boris Tadic has accused his opponent, the Conservative leader Tomislav Nikolic, of lacking a precise vision and a political line for the country's future, and of seeking to gain support through false accusations of cheating, thus disseminating fear and confusion among the population.

Speaking in the town of Zrenjanin, in northern Serbia, Mr Tadic said that Nikolic had a proven record of changing his position from one day to the next to suit his own interests.

This is ''a very dangerous'' way of conducting politics. The reference was in all probability to Mr Nikolic's exit in 2008 from the Serb Radical Party (SRS) of the ultra-nationalist Vojislav Seselj - a trenchant anti-European - and the creation of his own Party of Serb Progress (SNS), on more moderate positions and more favourable to Serbia's entry to the EU. ''In today's world it is indispensable to be predictable, reliable and stable, and we have stable policies. We cooperate with everyone, we travel freely and we attract investment to our country. This is why we will win these elections,'' Mr Tadic claimed. Over recent days, Mr Nikolic has been making accusations of electoral fraud during the general elections of May 6. These were legislative and local elections with the first round of the presidential election. These accusations of ballot paper forgery have been rebuffed by both the electoral commission and by the prosecutor general. The Democratic Party of Boris Tadic today said that Mr Nikolic is attempting to create a climate of fear, violence and anarchy in the country, with an attempt to impose laws by force.(ANSAmed).
