Syria: Terzi doubts opposition will negotiate with regime

Geneva is just the beginning, optimism is in order

(ANSAMed) - ROME, JULY 2 - It is doubtful that opposition leaders will be willing to sit at a negotiating table with Assad's regime, Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said today.

Terzi was commenting the results of the Geneva meeting of the Action Group on the Syrian crisis, in which world leaders called for a transition government. ''The Group's document is not particularly explicit about Assad's role during the transition, but it is very explicit that all parties are to be involved in it'', Terzi told reporters. ''If we take into account statements made by opposition leaders in the last few hours, it is very doubtful that they will agree to negotiate with Assad''. However, this is just the beginning of the process and a minimum of optimism is in order, the Minister said. (ANSAMed).
