30 March, 13:51

(ANSAmed) - ATHENS, MARCH 30 - The operation 'Clean Athens' has been set in motion by Greek police for the rehabilitation of the Greek capital's centre and the Piraeus district, where yesterday during police checks an immigrant bit off a policeman's finger.

The injured man was taken to hospital and the immigrant was arrested. Newspaper report that over 500 have been arrested in the Attica region so far.

''Police operations to lighten up the centre of Athens, to restore legality and safeguard social peace in the zones of the capital,'' said Citizens Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis, ''will continue. The first step has been taken.'' Athens mayor Giorgos Kaminis instead told the television station Skai that the annual number of illegal immigrants arriving in the capital was over 10,000. In circles close to the Citizens Protection Ministry, it is said that the police operations are also meant as a signal to discourage illegal immigrants, especially to those willing to return to their countries of origin due to the economic crisis underway in the country.
