Tunisia: Montada, meetings in Sousse on heritage at risk

24 February, 11:07

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, FEBRUARY 24 - The Montada project and the Forum Governance Civica association are organising "Heritage at risk", a two-day event in the Tunisian city of Sousse, to be held on February 25 and 26, which aims to raise awareness and actively involve local communities and authorities in the defence of cultural and natural heritage in Tunisia, a year on from the revolution in the country. The event was announced by sources coordinating the Montada project, which is based in Barcelona.

The initiatives scheduled during the event include guided visits of the medina, a photo exhibition documenting the various steps taken in the wake of the revolution, stands set up by the various associations working in Sousse on the issue of recovering heritage, citizen participation and governance, and a series of conferences and discussion forums with local organisations and populations. The Montada project is co-financed by the European Union to the tune of 1.5 million euros, as part of the EuroMed Heritage IV scheme. Its aim is to promote the heritage of old city centres through the creation of six local forums in three countries - Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia - with the involvement of local communities and authorities, both to protect material and immaterial heritage and to transform it into a driver for durable and sustainable development.
