(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, MAY 8 - On May 16 during an official two-day visit to Tunis, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano will inaugurate a "Tribute to Maurizio Valenzi" at the Italian Institute of Culture (IIC) in the Tunisian capital.

The tribute is a preview of a larger exhibition that the foundation which bears the name of the former MP and mayor of Naples will put on in Rome in November. The exhibition in Tunis, whose curator is IIC Director, Luigi Merolla, and Lucia Valenzi, gathers works from his Tunisian period or those works inspired by it, recounting "a deeply humane life displaying profound values" through paintings, drawings and photographs from the time period, it was explained during a presentation.

Valenzi, who was an Italian and European MP as well as the mayor of Naples from 1975 until 1983, died in 2009 just before turning 100 years of age. A foundation was dedicated to Valenzi three years ago and has established itself as one of the most important organisations in Southern Italy in the cultural and social world. While thanking the president of the republic, IIC Tunis Director Luigi Merolla explained that Napolitano's visit "has allowed a man, who united Italy and Tunisia through his personal life in his art and social and political battles, to be elevated to a worthy status". Through a display of Valenzi's personal work, the exhibition "strives to pay tribute to all Italians at the time in Tunisia, which contained three realities: Italian, Tunisian and French, thus forming a unique blend", Merolla added.
