Syria: Cypriot EU presidency prepared to work with Turkey

02 July, 16:53

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JULY 2 - The Cypriot EU Presidency is willing to work with Ankara to resolve the crisis with Syria in spite of certain doubts on Turkey's approach, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Andreas D. Mavroyiannis said today.

He was answering reporters' questions about Turkey's announcement that it intends to boycott the Cypriot EU Presidency, which runs July 1-December 31.

'Turkey is an important EU partner, so the idea is to find ways to work together', Mavroyiannis said. 'During our EU Presidency we will work with all partners to promote a peaceful transition to democracy in Syria'.

However Cyprus has doubts as to Turkey's approach to the Syrian crisis, the minister added. 'The democratic process could be used for other ends, by Turkey as well', Mavroyiannis said. 'We must be very cautious, and work in a spirit of trust to achieve our goal, which is to find a concrete answer to the aspirations of the Syrian people, with respect for human rights and without sacrificing any minorities, including the Christian one'.

Cyprus supports Kofi Annan's plan, but fears the situation could deteriorate. 'We are prepared to face a humanitarian crisis in that part of the world', Mavroyiannis said.(ANSAMed).
