Turkey: Brussels, Ankara must change anti-terror laws

Concern at arrest of human rights activist and union figures

28 June, 20:37

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JUNE 20 - Brussels has once more called on Ankara to change its anti-terror laws "as soon as possible". The message has been sent out by Peter Stano, the spokesman for the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule.

"The European Commission has learned with some concern of the arrest in Turkey of Osman Isci, an activist from the Euro-Mediterranean network for human rights and of a dozen trade union figures associated with the confederation of public workers unions," Stano said.

"The European Commission has observed a rise in the number of trials against defenders of human rights and members of trade unions, lawyers and journalists, with cases linked in particular to anti-terror legislation, " Stano said.

"The regulatory framework on terrorism and organised crime leads to repeated infringements of the right of liberty and security, the right to a fair trial and of freedom of expression, assembly and association, and should be modified as soon as possible". (ANSAmed).
