(ANSAMed) - ANKARA, AUGUST 8 - Turkey will intercede for the liberation of 48 Iranian Shiites kidnapped by Sunnite rebels in Damascus last Saturday, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told Anadolu news agency on Wednesday. This follows Davutoglu's meeting yesterday with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, who requested Turkey's help in freeing the men.

''We will make every effort so that those who were kidnapped in Syria may return to their families,'' Davutoglu said.

In a video broadcast by Al Arabiya TV, the captors said some of the hostages belong to the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, also known as Pasdaran. Salehi today replied that, while some of them may have been former Pasdaran, they were all in Damascus on a religious pilgrimage.

Turkey supports the Sunnite rebels in Syria, while Shiite Iran supports the Alawi regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
