Stricter sanctions, military action not possible, minister

(ANSAmed) - ROME, JUNE 1 - The international community must act in a ''united'' way in Syria, said Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi in an interview with Al Jazeera.

''The Libyan scenario cannot be repeated,'' the Italian FM continued, but we are ''deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation." Italy has already set up initiatives in the medical sector for the population. The minister continued that ''tomorrow's Arab League meeting in Doha is very important,'' but ''the consensus of the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council'' is required for an incisive move, ''therefore talks with the Russians are in progress." Terzi, is in Istanbul for the second international conference on Somalia. Talking to journalists, he said he is in favour of stricter sanctions against the Syrian regime and for a closer involvement of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. He made this remark after the ''terrible atrocities that are taking place'' in Syria. The minister continued that he believes the Syrian regime is ''responsible'' for the recent massacre in Houla, adding that it may be time to decide ''if it would be a good idea to ask the international criminal court to intervene, which would put more pressure'' on the regime. Italy, Terzi said, is also in favour of drafting a resolution in the UN Security Council to give the international observers in Syria ''more power to act and to protect themselves." The Italian minister called Russia's position in this context ''central''. Terzi concluded that he does not believe a ''military operation outside the UN Security Council is an option." The ''conditions are not right'' for an intervention like the one carried out in Libya, he added, ''not by the UN nor the Western countries or the governments in the region." (ANSAmed).
