Syria: Activists condemn kidnapping of Lebanese Shiites

23 May, 11:02

(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, MAY 23 - The Local Coordinating Committees of the opposition in Syria have spoken out against the kidnapping of 14 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims yesterday, which led to incidents in the Shiite areas of southern Beirut with the blocking of the road to the airport. Prior to the statements by the Committees, the Free Syrian Army (FSL) - armed wing of the opposition and accused of being behind the act - has denied all responsibility and condemned the incident as an attempt to discredit the organisation. In a statement the Local Coordinating Committees called the kidnapping ''a falsified incident'' aiming to ''spark sectarian conflict in the region''. The Committees added that chaotic situations of this type ''would offer the (Syrian) regime a rare opportunity to present itself to the world as a firefighter able to put out the flames in the region''.
