Syria: Cairo, Arab League conference could be cancelled

But secretary general confirms, event held on May 16 and 17

14 May, 18:40

(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, MAY 14 - There is a strong chance that the Arab League meeting in Cairo involving Syrian opposition groups could be cancelled over internal wrangling, a source close to the Syrian opposition in Cairo, who has asked to remain anonymous, has told ANSA. However, the general secretary of the Arab League, Nabil El-Arabi, has said that the conference will be held on May 16 and 17 and will be attended by representatives from countries on the UN Security Council as well as Tunisia and Turkey, which have hosted meetings of the "Friends of Syria".

It emerged today that the Syrian National Council (SNC) will not take part in the conference. The decision was announced by the Mena agency, which quoted an SNC official, Mohamed Sermini. The organisation has protested at the ambiguity of the issues to be discussed and the fact that the invitation to the event has been sent to members individually rather than to the SNC itself. The next few hours will be crucial, Sermini added, as the new chair of the organisation is to be elected this evening at a meeting in Rome. (ANSAmed).
