Syria: Barroso, no speculation on military intervention

To Lebanese premier, ready to increase humanitarian support

26 April, 20:30

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, APRIL 26 - ''I don't speculate'' on a possible military intervention in Syria, said the president of the European Commission, Jose' Manuel Barroso, in answer to press questions regarding the possibility of a failure of Kofi Annan's mediation. ''The European Union,'' Barroso said, ''focuses on unreserved support to UN and Arab League representative Kofi Annan. This view has been approved by the EU foreign ministers and therefore let's avoid speculations.'' After his meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikabi, Barroso underlined that ending the violence and access to humanitarian aid are still the priorities in Syria. ''We will continue to work together with the Arab League,'' Barroso added, ''to find a solution for the problem, not only of Syria but the entire region." Syria ''is a sensitive question for Lebanon, so we appreciate the fact that the country welcomes the people who are fleeing'' from Syria. The European Commission is prepared ''to step up its humanitarian support to the region." (ANSA)
