With this victory Al-Attiyah, a race car driver who is a national hero at home for winning the 2011 Dakar Rally, has now attained star status for bringing Qatar back onto the Olympic podium after a 12-year hiatus.
Along with Saudi Arabia and Brunei, Qatar has never previously sent female athletes to the Olympics. This year it sent swimmer Nada Arkaji, sprinter Noor al-Malki and shooter Bayiha Mansour al-Hamad, who was asked to be its flag-bearer at the opening ceremonies. In a parallel push to support its female athletes, Qatar's Museum Authority has also organized a promotional London exhibition about them.(ANSAMed).
