Morocco: reality far away from new Constitution, HRW

Police too free to act

18 May, 15:34

(ANSAmed) - RABAT, MAY 18 - Human Right Watch (HRW) has denounced the reality in the country is very different from the new Moroccan Constitution. According to the organisation, the violence used by police officers remains unpunished and freedom of expression is not tolerated in the country. HRW has said that it is disappointed in ''the fact that the Moroccan authorities have not carried out a correct investigation into the beating of a HRW activist by police officers'', showing ''the impunity of police violence.'' According to Sarah Leah Whitson, director of the NGO's Middle East and North Africa division, ''Morocco has to open an impartial, interactive and rapid inquiry to look into reports of violence used by the police.'' Another fact that has drawn the attention of HRW is the recent conviction of Moroccan rapper Mouad Belghouat ''Al-Haqed'' (''the suspect'') to one year in prison for ''insulting the police.'' ''This sentence,'' the organisation denounces, ''shows the gap between the 2011 Moroccan Constitution, which strongly supports freedom of expression, and the continuing intolerance towards people who criticise state institutions.''
