(ANSAmed) - SARAJEVO, APRIL 26 - Hundreds of religious
leaders of all confessions and people from the world of culture
and politics from over 60 countries will be present at the 26th
International Meeting of Prayer for Peace in Sarajevo, from
September 9 to 11.
Organised by the Community of Sant'Egidio in the spirit of
Assisi, the historic day of prayer, an initiative of Pope John
Paul II in 1986, the event was presented today in the Bosnian
capital by the city's archbishop, cardinal Vinco Puljic, by the
president of the Umbrian Episcopal Conference, monsignor
Vincenzo Paglia and by representatives of three Bosnian
religious communities.
The event is organised by the Archdiocese of
Vrhbosna-Sarajevo, in close collaboration with the Islamic
Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serbian Orthodox
Patriarchate and the Jewish Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The idea to hold the meeting in the Bosnian capital this year,
the 20th anniversary of the start of the war (1992-95) was
launched last year by monsignor Pero Sudar of Sarajevo and the
head of the Islamic Community in Bosnia, Mustafa Ceric. The
meeting, the cardinal said, will contribute to ''launching a
real peace strategy from this city''.
''Religious people don't have armies, don't have banks nor
political power,'' said monsignor Paglia. ''But religions have
the power to reach people's heart and we want to touch
everybody's heart, also because we have to come together to
redesign the future of this land." (ANSAmed)
