(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, 13 JUNE - Turkey beat EU as a "supporter" of the Arab Spring countries . This is one of the data resulting from the third Euromed investigation ordered by the European Institute for the Mediterranean (IEMed) and recently presented to the European Parliament. The investigation was carried out between December 2011 and February 2012 in the 43 Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean. Although 4,650 people were interviewed, only 695 replies (a representative sample) were taken into consideration for the investigation. On a 01-10 scale, Turkey ranks first among countries supporting the Arab Spring countries, with an average score of 5.9 in replies.

The European Union ranks second on the same list (5.4), then come the Arab League (4.4), the Gulf Cooperation Council (3.7), Saudi Arabia (3), China (2.9), Russia (2.8) and Iran (2.2.). The perception of the EU changes according to the country the investigation was carried out in: in Libya, Syria, Tunisia and Egypt, respondents maintained that the EU "supported political change"; in Morocco and Jordan, respondents tend to maintain that the EU "helped preserving stability". According to respondents in Algeria and Lebanon, Brussels had "no impact whatsoever on internal developments". As for expectations on enduring democracy, the most optimistic expectations regard Tunisia, followed by Lebanon and Morocco, while Algeria and Syria are seen as the countries where the scenario is at its most "discouraging". The perception of the Union for the Mediterranean is negative: on a 1-10 scale, the UfM only gains a 3.8 point consensus score. (ANSAmed).
