(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS - An international conference on the role
of the media in countries in a transitional phase, like those of
the Arab Spring, will be the top-level event on the upcoming
International Press Freedom Day on May 3 in Tunis. Celebrating
it will be UNESCO, said Jane Karklins, assistant to the general
director for communication and information of the UN, on her
visit to Brussels. ''There will be Tunisia's Prime Minister,
Hamed Jebali,'' said Karklins, ''and hundreds of journalists
from across the region will be taking part.''
''The event in Tunis in itself,'' added Karklins, ''will not
produce any immediate results, but will contribute to high-level
training. Moreover, there will be hundreds of Tunisian
journalists who will have the chance to exchange experiences
with others of the same profession.'' UNESCO will be working in
Tunisia for freedom of the press, ''continuing the dialogue and
relaunching our contribution to gradual change in the country,
which will continue for several years.''
In the European Parliament Karklins will be making a specific
appeal: ''my message will be to request greater involvement of
European MPs, already active on the front of freedom on the
internet and new media to foster freedom of expression.''
