(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, MAY 4 - After more than 16 years in
prison, 44-year old Hagai Amir, a far-right extremist who in
1995 helped his brother Igal Amir to carry out a deadly attack
on the Labour party Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin.
Amir's parents were waiting for him outside the gates of Ayalon prison in Ramale, as well as a group of supporters, while a group of left-wing activists was also present.
Upon his release, Hagai Amir showed himself to be defiant, making a "victory" sign and saying that he was "proud" of his actions. It is reported that he will spend the weekend in a West Bank settlement.
Rabin's family has reacted strongly, saying that the thought of Amir being freed is "unbearable". The "Peace Now" movement has appealed to Israelis to keep Amir's family in total isolation.
