(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JUNE 8 - The European Union condemns
the decision taken by the Israeli government to build more than
800 new housing units in the West Bank. ''I deplore Israeli
Government plans to relocate some of the settlers from Ulpana
within the occupied Palestinian territory.'' EU High
Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton said in a
statement.
''Settlements are illegal under international law'' Ashton
continues, ''and threaten to make a two-state solution
impossible. Settlement activity is detrimental to current peace
efforts, including by the Quartet, and puts those efforts at
risk.'' Ashton also asks the Israeli government to ''exercise
the highest sense of responsibility by reversing these decisions
to demonstrate its commitment toward the peace process, in full
respect of international law.'' (ANSAmed).
