Serbia: Hopes for continuing progress towards EU, Van Rompuy

25 May, 21:03

(ANSAmed) - LJUBLJANA, MAY 25 - European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has said today in Ljubljana that all Balkan countries, if they want to become EU member states in the future, ''must continue with reforms of an EU nature'', and expressed the hope that ''the new leadership in Serbia will continue on its path towards the EU in a decisive and firm manner''.

''Reconciliation and regional cooperation are the crucial points for stability, development and European integration of the Western Balkans,'' Van Rompuy said in making a speech to the Slovenian parliament.

''The EU will not cease to support reforms of an EU nature, but the final decision concerning EU accession is up to the individual countries and populations,'' he added, noting that in these days he is thinking ''especially about Serbia''.

''Despite all of its current problems, the EU remains an anchor of stability and peace, a symbol of change and hope,'' he concluded. (ANSAmed).
