(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, MAY 8 - Spain was the number one destination for European students who took part in the Erasmus programme last year according to figures published today by the EU Commission. The numbers showed that in 2010-2011 over 231,000 students received Erasmus scholarships to study or receive training abroad, setting a new record with an 8.5% increase over the previous year. The top three universities selected by Erasmus students were Granada, Valencia and then the Complutense University of Madrid.

After Spain, the top destinations were in France and the UK, and the majority of students who studied abroad in the programme were Spanish, French and German.

The Erasmus programme, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, has provided more than 2.5 million European students with the opportunity to study abroad at a university or to work at a business. ''In these difficult times,'' said European Commissioner for Education, Androulla Vassiliou, ''the abilities acquired thanks to Erasmus study and placement programmes are more valuable now than ever. If we had a larger budget we would have satisfied more requests. This is why our goals are to increase our budget for 2013-2020 and to double the number of scholarships.'' (ANSAmed).
