(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, MAY 4 - The European Commission is once
again intervening to help dismissed workers in Spain, a
consequence of the economic crisis. Brussels has in fact
proposed to allocate 1.6 million euros to assist 350 former
employees of 143 small shoe factories in the Valencia region.
The funds, which will arrive via the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), are awaiting the approval of the European Parliament and European Council. ''Workers in the Spanish footwear industry,'' said EU Labour Commissioner Laszlo Andor, ''have been hit hard by the increasing global competition. This funding proposal will help them find new jobs by learning new skills." The request made by the Spanish authorities regards 876 workers who lost their jobs due to the fact that the shoe market is more and more dominated by China and India, while countries like Vietnam and Indonesia continue to increase their global market share.
