(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, APRIL 27 - ''It is clear that the Syrian
regime is not complying with its obligations'' for a ceasefire,
contained within the plan by UN and Arab League special envoy
Kofi Annan. This was said today by Michael Mann, spokesperson
for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, in response to
journalists' questions.
''We are very much concerned about the continuing violence
despite the ceasefire accepted by the Syrian regime,'' Mann
said. ''They promised to withdraw their troops from the cities
and this did not happen.'' Mann then reiterated the European
Union's full support for the UN observers mission, which will be
deployed next week in Syria. ''We hope that the presence of
observers,'' said the spokesman, ''will change the situation on
the field and are prepared to support this mission from a
technical standpoint.''
Mann said that he did not want to ''speculate'' instead on the
possibility of military intervention backed by the EU should
Annan's mediation efforts not bear fruit. ''We are working for
Annan's success,'' he reiterated. (ANSAmed).
