(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, APRIL 27 - ''Attacks on aid workers are
unacceptable,'' said EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and
Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva on learning of the killing
of Mohammed Khadra, a Red Crescent rescue worker and volunteer
killed while trying to save the lives of others in Duma (near
Damascus). The circumstances of his death have yet to be
clarified.
''The continuing of violence is fostering the humanitarian
crisis, Georgieva said, ''leading to ever greater needs which
must be met urgently. I appeal to the Syrian government to
collaborate with international humanitarian organisations and
allow their workers free access.'' In her message the European
Commissioner underscored the ''sovereign impartiality'' of
humanitarian aid, which deals with ''saving human lives''
independently of religious beliefs.
''As Europeans,'' Georgieva concluded, ''we praise the great
work done by the Syrian Red Crescent and ask everyone in Syria
to respect aid workers, who put their lives at risk to provide
assistance to the most vulnerable.'' (ANSAmed).
