Above 62 mln already allocated for assistance in 2012

26 April, 20:32

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, APRIL 26 - The European Commission has added 30 million euros in extra aid to accompany Lebanon in its reforms this year. The announcement was made today in Brussels by EC President Jose' Manuel Barroso, after his meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikabi.

''I have given the Lebanese prime minister a clear message of our support and encouragement to the necessary political, economic and social reforms,'' Barroso explained, ''the best way to long-term stability. We will provide 30 million in extra funding, adding to the 62 million already allocated for 2012." Barroso also ''encouraged Lebanon to join the WTO." According to EU neighbourhood policy commissioner Stefan Fule, the extra money for Lebanon ''reflects the EU's commitment to supporting reforms for institutions, democracy, civil society, good governance and human rights, but also for an inclusive economic growth." Lebanon has opened negotiations with the European Commission regarding the new national action plan, the basis of cooperation in the context of the EU's neighbourhood policy. (ANSAmed)
