The regional councillor for culture Mario Caligiuri described the initiative as "the most important cooperation and educational integration programme in the Mediterranean" on the occasion of the signing of the Pitagora Mundus programme involving the Calabria Region and Egypt's higher education ministry, represented by the Foundation Misr-El-kheir. Training will be provided by six different technical and professional institutes across the region.
"In this way Calabria is putting into practice and concretising its centrality in the Mediterranean region," said Caligiuri, adding that the initiative "is being followed with great interest by the Italian government". The councillor also noted that Egypt has invested 6 million euros in the programme, resulting in an increase in the number of enrolments in schools in Calabria, which he said are "in freefall due to the population decrease", and thus preventing them from closing.
