Tourism: Cyprus, Ryanair in hot water over north hotels

11 May, 14:16

(ANSAmed) - NICOSIA, MAY 11 - Low-Cost Ryanair airlines, which has set up a hub in Paphos (on the southern coas of the Republic of Cyprus) with state incentives and is offering 15 new destinations, has fallen foul of the government over the advertising of hotels in the north (under Turkish military occupation) on its website, business web portal StockWatch reported yesterday. According to StockWatch the issue was raised with the airline last week by Cypriot officials but Ryanair has as yet made no moves to change its website. Chairman of Cyprus Tourism Organisation, Alecos Orountiotis, told StockWatch they were taking all the necessary measure to find a solution, as Ryanair is vital to boosting the island's tourism. The issue was apparently raised at a meeting between the finance and labour ministers on Cyprus Airways, which complained of losing out to the low-cost carriers. StockWatch contacted Ryanair headquarters in Ireland but a short reply said: "Ryanair never comments on rumours", although hotels in North occupied city of Kyrenia are actually listed on its website.
