Bosnia: EC, country has never been closer to EU

Fule to meet political leaders on June 27th

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, 23 MAY - 'Bosnia has never been closer to Europe as now''. So said the Director of the EU Directorate for Enlargement of the European Commission, Stefano Sannino, concerning Sarajevo's European membership. The next step of this new forward-looking phase of the EU-Bosnia relations will be a summit in Brussels, scheduled for June 27th. The Commissioner responsible for enlargement and European neighbourhood policy Stefan Fule,'' Sannino said, ''organised a summit in Brussels with the three members of the presidency, the prime ministers, the leaders of the political parties, in order to discuss with them, from a very practical point of view, the mechanisms aimed at coordinating their positions, in view of the negotiations with the EU''.

A very tangible step toward Sarajevo's next goal, that is, Bosnia's application as a candidate Member State. However, in order to get there, ''the first thing we need is to implement the association agreement'', Sannino explained, ''which is the preliminary condition to provide a plausible application for EU membership''. The Director of the EU Directorate for Enlargement of the European Commission did not exclude that this might be a realistic goal by 2012: ''If the efforts which have been made up until now can create a favourable and concrete solution, why exclude it?''.
