Algeria: Elections, 500 foreign observers on their way

Including EU, UN, AU and Arab League representatives

05 May, 02:21

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, MAY 4 - The small army (around 500) of foreign observers who will check if the Algerian elections scheduled on May 10 are held correctly will be completed in the coming days. The group includes 60 European Union experts and twelve members of the European Parliament. The total number of European observers (several arrived days ago in Algeria) will be around 140. They will be joined by 20 accredited ambassadors in Algiers. The EU observers, unlike other observers who will leave the country much earlier, will stay in Algeria until June, when they will draft a final report. This report will then be released within a short matter of time (perhaps in the same month, and no later than July). The Arab League will also be present with a large group of observers (132) who will arrive in Algiers on Sunday. The Arab League general secretariat will be present with 14 of its members. The African Union (AU) will send 200 observers, the UN 10 and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation 20. (ANSAmed).
