Kosovo: Albania, should be member of Council of Europe

Tirana takes on presidency of European body for 6 months

(ANSAmed) - STRASBOURG, MAY 23 - ''Albania's position is that Kosovo should be integrated into the Council of Europe, but we will need to wait and see the position of other member states before assessing what can be done,'' the Albanian Foreign Minister, Edmond Haxhinasto, said today. Haxhinasto was speaking in Strasbourg during the handover of the presidency of the Council of Europe from the United Kingdom to Albania, which will be at the head of the organisation for the next 6 months.

The British Foreign Minister, William Hague, said that he did not believe that the conditions were currently in place for Kosovo to join the Council of Europe. ''The UK has recognised Kosovo, along with another 33 of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe,'' Hague said, adding that ''as a result, we are looking forward to the day that Kosovo is included in all international organisations. But for this to happen, there is the need for an agreement among everyone at the Council of Europe, which is not currently in place''. (ANSAmed).
