Consensus needed on key issues in long term

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, MAY 3 - Albania's progress on its journey towards EU integration depend first and foremost on "dialogue between political forces", the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule, has said today. Speaking at the Albanian Parliament in Tirana, Fule sent out a loud and clear message, after a lengthy status quo between the ruling majority and the opposition in the country, which for some time has blocked Albania's progress towards the EU.

Fule said that an important factor in Albania's road towards the EU would be "the ability to find a consensus in Parliament" and "shared and tangible results in tackling important reforms", as laid out in the annual assessment of the European Commission. "It is crucial that Albania makes good use of the time between now and the Commission's report in October, to show the political desire required for European integration," Fule said. Brussels says that there are four sectors in Albania in which intervention is key: electoral reform, the role of parliament, the rule of law and human rights. "Good electoral practice in line with European and international standards remains a key priority for Albania with regard to its EU aspirations," the Commissioner remarked. "Parliament is a key institution in all European countries," he added, and is the basis of democracy. Fule commented that a constructive attitude by the assembly "is crucial for reaching a deal on the necessary reforms, appropriate control of legislation in other key areas and supervising the application of reforms as agreed".
